Orion boosts the functionality of analog and DOS-based SEMs with new computer hardware and software that allow rapid digital image acquisition and control. Users of earlier model JEOL SEMs can now view live and stored images, manage and create recipes, email files, and generate reports. Depending on the model and configuration, the SEM can be upgraded to the most basic image acquisition level or can be reconfigured to allow column control and stage control.

There are three configurations of the ORION Control System Upgrade:

1. ORION IMAGE
   The ORION IMAGE is an image acquisition and handling system for JEOL SEMs. The system consists of a Windows XP Professional™ equipped PC configured with image acquisition and processing hardware and ORION Control System software. ORION acquires frame averaged images and frame integrated images as well as slow-scan images for storage and recall. Image annotation and processing are also available from the ORION desktop. Images may be saved in BMP, JPEG, or TIFF formats.
    
2. ORION IMAGE-EOS
   The ORION IMAGE-EOS expands on the ORION IMAGE, image acquisition and handling system with the addition of the EOS component which permits user access to most column controls though the ORION software interface. Column conditions can be saved and restored by user-defined recipes.
     
3. ORION IMAGE-EOS-STAGE
   The ORION IMAGE-EOS-STAGE configuration adds to IMAGE-EOS the ability to drive stage coordinates by use of a joystick, numerical entry, incremental step, location recall, and "point and shoot."
