MALDI-TOFMS has broad use across a wide range of applications, such as, biological, polymer, small molecules, and MS imaging analyses. The use of MALDI-TOFMS continues to expand thanks to advancements in instrument development.

The JMS-S3000 "SpiralTOF™" series has adopted the high resolving power SpiralTOF. A second linear TOF mass analyzer allows for analyses up to 500,000 amu. Moreover, a TOF-TOF option can be configured for MS/MS using high-energy collision-induced dissociation.
SpiralTOF mode (green above):
SpiralTOF mode has a long flight distance (17 m) in a compact space. As it makes the ions fly while focusing them, it realizes both high mass resolving power/mass accuracy as well as high sensitivity. As the high resolving power of the TOMFS, it can provide high mass resolving power/high mass accuracy in a wider mass range than a typical reflectron type of mass analyzer. This can be utilized for accurate mass measurement of molecular weight less than 50,000 amu, responding to a wide variety of analyses.
TOF-TOF mode (purple above):
Tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer with SpiralTOF for the first TOFMS and reflectron type TOFMS for the second TOFMS. Structural analysis is possible from the informative cleavage patterns based on the high energy collision-induced dissociation.
LinearTOF mode (red above):
This is a linear type ion optics. It is the simplest ion optics that can measure high molecular weight samples. It is mainly used for the analyses of proteins and high molecular weight polymers.

MALDI MS imaging was initially developed to focus on high molecular weight compounds such as proteins and peptides. However, with the expanding applications of MALDI MS imaging, the interests have shifted to include smaller molecules such as lipids, pharmaceuticals, and pharmaceutical metabolites. Conventional MALDI-reflectron TOFMS has difficulty discerning small molecule signals from matrix molecules. In the case of MALDI MS imaging, signals from unwanted molecules on the specimen surface will often interfere with signals from the target analytes. High selectivity by means of high mass-resolving power is essential for obtaining reliable target analyte spatial distributions. The SpiralTOF™-plus 3.0 with its high mass-resolving power is indispensable for MALDI MS imaging.
