Evaluation of Asphaltene Products by Mass Spectrometry using Catalytic Pyrolysis
General
Efficient catalytic upgrade of asphaltenes is essential in enhancing the economic and environmental value of heavy oil refinement. Asphaltenes are known for their complex molecular structure. They are also highly aromatic and capable of forming coke. Minimizing the coke formation is one of the specific issues in upgrading asphaltenes. Catalytic pyrolysis is attracting attention as a means to increase the yield of valuable compounds while reducing coke formation. Also, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PY/GC/HRTOFMS) system is an effective tool for qualitative analysis of pyrolytic products.
In this work, we evaluated the effect of HZSM-5 catalyst on degraded products of asphaltene using PY/GC/HRTOFMS.
