Qualitative analysis by combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) generally relies on database searching for electron ionization (EI) mass spectra. However, the molecular ion may be weak or absent in EI mass spectra. Chemical ionization (CI) is a widely used soft ionization method that can often provide molecular weight information that is lacking in the EI mass spectra. JEOL msFineAnalysis iQ software makes use of the integrated information from both EI and soft ionization GC-MS data for confident qualitative analysis.
