Analyses of the thermal characteristics and gaseous products of guanidine nitrate/basic copper nitrate mixtures using calorimetry with high resolution mass spectrometry

This work assessed the pyrolysis of a well-established gas generating agent consisting of a mixture of guanidine nitrate (GN) with basic copper nitrate (BCN), using thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry in conjunction with high resolution mass spectrometry (TG/DSC/HRMS). This instrumentation simultaneously determined mass changes and heat flow, and also permitted evaluation of evolved gases on an accurate mass basis. Fragmentation ratio correction was used to analyze the MS data acquired via electron ionization. GN/BCN mixtures were found to undergo pyrolysis to evolve H2O, N2, NO, CO2 and N2O. Using HRMS, species having similar masses, such as CO2 and N2O, CO and N2, and NH3 and OH, were successfully distinguished. The thermal analysis data and the gas evolution results allowed a pyrolysis mechanism to be proposed. In this mechanism, a copper(II) complex obtained from the BCN catalytically decomposes NH3 generated from the GN to produce N2 and H2O. The pyrolysis of a mixture of GN and BCN thus provides a synergistic effect that increases the heat and gas output.

AccuTOF GC Petroleum & Petrochemicals Applications Notebook

The JMS-T200GC  AccuTOF™ GCx-plus is a superior gas chromatograph - high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC-HRTOFMS) system that simultaneously accomplishes high mass-resolution analysis, high mass accuracy, and high-speed data acquisition, satisfying all your needs for petroleum and petrochemical analyses.

Monitoring Rotary Vacuum Pump Oil Degradation by Using Field Desorption (FD)-TOFMS and Group-type Analysis Software

Field Desorption (FD) is a technique that ionizes analytes by electron tunneling from the analyte molecules to a solid surface (emitter) in a high electric field. The sample is applied directly onto the emitter and heated by applying an electric current through the emitter for desorption and ionization. FD has been used for the analysis of nonvolatile compounds, synthetic polymers, etc., as a soft ionization method to produce molecular ions with little or no fragmentations. As a result, the average molecular weight of a sample can be calculated directly from the masses (or “m/z”) and intensities for all of the ions observed in the FD mass spectrum. Furthermore, by applying group-type analysis, the components can be classified into types based on their functional groups and/or unsaturations. Average molecular weight, polydispersity index, or relative abundance of each type can also be obtained. In this work, new and used rotary vacuum pump (RP hereafter) oils were analyzed by FD. Afterwards, the change in their compositions was determined by performing group-type analysis on the resulting mass spectra.

Analysis of Additives in Plastic by Thermal Desorption (TD)

Among the various methods used for characterizing plastics, pyrolysis (Py) GC/MS and thermal desorption (TD) GC/MS are widely used for both qualitative and quantitative analyses. These are simple techniques that provide detailed information about the samples. In this application note, we report the analysis of additives in plastic by using a thermal desorption system and a JEOL JMS-T100GCV "AccuTOF GCv" GC-TOFMS. Identification of the analytes was accomplished by library search and accurate mass measurement. Additionally, isotope cluster pattern matching was performed using the "Mass Spec Tools™" software to help identify an unknown compound that was present in the sample.

Fraction base-KMD plots for a high-MW - S3000 - MSTips - 283

High molecular weight polymers are often MS-silent due to their inherent high dispersity (DM) or detected in the high mass range with low resolving power. An "on-plate" alkaline degradation has thus been developed as a sample pre-treatment on the MALDI target with tenths of ng of polymer to cut long industrial polyester chains into short oligomers amenable to MALDI-HRMS.

High Sensitivity Analysis of Intact Proteins using Linear TOF

The JMS-S3000 SpiralTOF has a unique 17m flight path that offers then highest resolution MALDI-TOF MS system currently available. However, ions with a very short lifetime or that undergo spontaneous dissociation during their flight cannot be detected by the SpiralTOF (or a conventional reflection TOF). To address this situation, the SpiralTOF with Linear TOF option can be used for the high sensitivity analysis of intact proteins.

Evolved Gas Analysis of Iron Powder using a TG/DTA System with a High-resolution Multi-turn Mass Spectrometer

Thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) systems are often used to analyze the thermal behavior of metal materials. These systems measure changes in sample weight as they relate to programmed oven temperatures. It is generally known that during the measurement process, as the weight decreases, gases are evolved.
