Instituto de Biologia, Universidade Federal Fluminense

The Institute of Biology, at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), was established in 1983 and has therefore been teaching and supporting research for more than 30 years. The acquisition of a transmission electron microscope began to be pursued with the hiring of professionals (MSc and PhDs), who had their education in Cell Biology under the guidance of Professor Wanderley de Souza. Some of these professionals came from the Cellular Ultrastructure group of Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz), which was directed by Dr. Maria Nazareth Leal S Meireles in the late 90s. Among the researchers were Dr. Dilvani Santos , Dr. Saulo C. Bourguignon and Dr. Renato Cruz who left us too soon. The institution successfully acquired a JEOL microscope Model JEM-1011. The equipment was requested in a Ctinfra subproject in 2011 under the coordination of Prof. Saulo C. Bourguignon and installation was completed in December 2012. Currently, the TEM is in full operation and is located downstairs of the new UFASA facility at the red beach (Praia Vermelha).
UFF held its first Electron Microscopy Workshop at on November 19, 2013 in the Dentistry School auditorium - Valonguinho campus (Niterói, Rio de Janeiro). The event was supported by a very significant audience, and exceeded the expectations of organizers. The workshop also marked the beginning of activities of the “Plataforma de Microscopia Eletrônica” as a multi user facility.

Pioneer electron microscopy work in progress at the UFF facilities:

Dr. Saulo Cabral Bourguignon – Graduate School Program - PPBI
"Ultrastructure of T. cruzi: a study of the differentiation and activity of natural products"
Dr. Carolina Nascimento Spiegel - Graduate Program in Education of Biosciences and Health IOC / FIOCRUZ - UFF
"Use of electron microscopy to understand the insect vector of Leishmaniosis chemical communication"
Dr. Suelen Adriani Marques - Graduate Program in Neurosciences - UFF
"Ultra structural analysis of neurodegenerative and neuroregenerative events"
Dr. Gutemberg Gomes Alves – Graduate School Program in Dentistry UFF
